Maiko Zulu Steps Down from Kwacha Music Awards Nomination to Protect His Marriage

Reggae artist Maiko Zulu has officially withdrawn his nomination from the Humanitarian category at this year’s Kwacha Music Awards, citing the decision as a move to “save his marriage.”

The celebrated Zambian musician, who was nominated alongside his wife Sista D, told Diggers Lite that while competition is healthy in the music industry, sometimes it can affect personal relationships — and that’s something he’s not willing to risk.

A Sign of Unity Over Competition

Speaking on his decision, Maiko explained that his withdrawal wasn’t about losing interest in the awards but about choosing unity over rivalry.

“Being nominated alongside my wife in the same category is exciting, but our marriage and values come first,” he said. “We’ve built our relationship over 35 years, and I’d rather protect that than compete for a trophy.”

The couple’s nomination reportedly caused some confusion among their fans, who were unsure who to vote for. Even their daughter, Maiko revealed, felt torn between her parents and considered not voting at all.

Fans React to Maiko’s Decision

Many fans have praised Maiko’s humility and wisdom, describing his action as a rare gesture of love and maturity in the entertainment industry. Others noted that his choice sends a strong message about the importance of family, even in competitive spaces like the music industry.

As one of Zambia’s most respected reggae figures, Maiko Zulu continues to use his influence not only through music but also through the principles he stands for — peace, love, and unity.
